Another not so good stihl jug

I'm wondering if they didn't start buying Chinese crap??? Could cause inconsistencies. Or maybe they didn't know it with the quality of the aluminum. Lots of possibilities. I'm pretty sure they don't mold their own jugs... Do they???

David, I have been to the orient many times and have vast experience in sourcing for one of the world's largest companies. North Korea has unbelievable quality, you don't see it because so many countries ban the importation of NK products, so to get around this they do what is called trans shipping, it is illegal but a common practice, they forward the product to another countries port and and that is where the paper work showing the origin of product is by corrupt officials who are getting paid under the table.
And sadly it is true that people who repeatedly screw up/or don't support the "great leader" are put to death. Most workers are already typed by the govt and when they are executed, their organs wind up in Hong Kong going into wealthy middle easterners, Europeans and yes, Americans. Everyone over their knows it going on and turns a blind eye. NK has one of the worst human rights records in history. Next time you see a top of the line North Face jacket, better think in the label is the correct place of origin, it isn't just clothing, they have the best german and Japanese machining equipment. They can hold the tolerances to make a nuclear weapon. Too many people have under estimated their capabilities already. Vietnam is going to emerge just like China has in the next few years, they are becoming a manufacturing powerhouse, a shift in production is already occurring to Vietnam. Most factories use European management, as well as Aussies, I've seen a lot of Belgians there. You need to do a little rescreach before you pop off on something that you more than likely never experienced.

Its time for me to join this thread. The cylinders look very poor from several aspects. The aluminum casting is low cost alternative to lost core process. The plating is showing inconsistency. The control in the plating process is key to results. I have worked in Germany for the last ten years for Mercedes Bendz. I would bet my last dollar that Stihl outsourced cylinder manufacturing to the Czec Republic. That is the first choice to the smaller German manufactures. As the quality on Stihl's covers and paint goes up, I am sure the quality will go down on the inside. It is the standard practice of material cost management, MCM. Nothing will change until market share is effected. It is really sad to see another good company fall to MCM practices gone astray.

I have been noticing the lack of quality in every new saw I have opened up for over a year now. I have fussed about it plenty.
The lack there of has only been in Stihl saws.
The Husky's, Dolmar's, Jonsered's I have opened up have been great.

Really annoying, because not only are the casting marks more and more, they are hard and it is a pain to smooth a port with so many flaws.

With Stihl upping it's prices and quality taking a nap, I plan on sticking with other brands.

Looks to me to be a case of Stihl using inferior aluminum alloy to save money and using a poor form for casting. Two strikes and your out!

More like poor casting, not the alloy. It will take much more than 2 strikes to get them out though.

If this is a trend, and Stihl [bad enough I have to buy from a German company to get quality US made power tools] is whoring out their name for quick profits using a good name over cheap parts: I hope all those involved in said decision encounter an ax murderer with a dull edge and find their way to an eternity of he!! cutting steel entwined hardwood with safetychain on a Wildthing.

the new 357xp i ordered came in.

while waiting i started considering maybe i should get the ms361 instead.dealer sells both and doesn't care.i just figured i'd have something to keep the 200t and 192t company.

well,this thread made up my mind for me.the top handles are gonna have to live as they were. the 357 is coming home in the morning.

More like poor casting, not the alloy. It will take much more than 2 strikes to get them out though.

I'm getting tired of these look at these jug threads! Chances are every company out there has castings just like this one slip through and has for years. How many of you guys are running saws with flaws just like this and don't even know it, stihl or not. This is getting old real fast!

I can understand that....but nobody is having problems with Husky or Dolmar castings and we've got guys tearing those apart on a regular basis too. I'm glad to have the info and pictures posted. Whether or not it will affect how a saw runs is almost irrelevant to me as it speaks to the overall level of quality a company is willing to accept in its product.

You and me both, LOL. While some are informative(like this one by TW), most see it as a bash fest. Since Stihl has the most saws out there, they come a runnin'. I had a 361 jug off this week, for a stripped plug hole, had the same castings and one port edge that wasn't beveled. As long as the plating stays attached and no rings catch, I'll continue to buy Stihl OPE.

If the casting quality is that poor than being that pretty much all my saws have been replaced lately i'm sure that I have a couple of these so called junk jugs. My question is to the saw builders, is for a guy like myself that uses his saws daily am I not gonna get my normal 2 yr turnaround out of my equipment? Or is it simply just pointing out a slip in quality control? If so than my long term realtionship with stihl will be over. I know there are faster cutting, smoother running saws than stihl, but I personally haven't ran a more dependable line of saws which is why I buy em. Let me also say I don't mod them, port them I simply use them for their intended purpose.

That being said the orange brands are the saws i've had next to no issues with.
