I just had a buddy email me this link. It is 11 minutes long but worth the watch. About 5 minutes into the video there is some footage of using the snow-motor to haul logs.

If you have a slow internet connection It might be faster to got to the link direct.

Very interesting. I wonder how hard it would be to make a modern version< maybe a conversion kit or something?

If you mean the Zil, the Fordson Snow Devil was first and the Russians copied it.

I have been toying with the idea of building a screw type running gear platform that I could drive my skidsteer up onto and then couple the skidder wheels to the running gear for propulsion. That would eliminate the need for gearboxes etc. to independently spin the screws. I just don't have any spare cash to throw at the idea at the moment. I was thinking that culvert pipe would make a decent base for the screw cylinders and some sort of couplers that bolt onto the skidder wheels via the lug nuts and couple to the running gear with CV driveshafts. That would allow the running gear to flex and hold the terrain better. It's just a few drawings and thoughts now but maybe someday....

i get a kick out of old movies....the guys were always dressed with hats and shirt and ties...no matter what they were doing.
