HI guys,

I've read alot of posts about high shipping charges on ebay over the past few months, but here is my new story. I just won two old macs from a guy in British Columbia ( model 49, 73). Shipping was to be calculated at the end of the auction. Seller sends me a shipping total of $120 dollars. Is it just me or is this a little high. I was thinking that $70 should have covered it. Can anybody out there give me an approximate of what shipping should be from B.C. to Indiana.

Thanks

Travis

I just purchased a Mac 250 off ebay from a guy in BC, no bar or chain approx cost $35 maybe $40, to Ill., Canada UPS, no insurance. What bothers me with this deal is the guy shipped out the wrong saw by mistake, now I'm getting a 1-53 with no side cover but I'll be getting a bar and chain. I assume it is an honest mistake, and going through the hassle of reshipping it back just isn't worth it to me, who knows maybe I'm getting a better saw in the long run, time will tell after it gets here.

At that weight I would approximate it at $80 to $90 in U.S. funds.

Call UPS, Fedex and ask what they charge for that run, they will gladly quote you.

I looked up postage on the canadian post web site. The seller was almost rihgt about the cost. He didn't do the conversion to USD, and he is charging a $8 handling fee. He also used 40lbs as his wieght. The model 73 is power head only so the weight shouldn't be more than 35 lbs boxed. So that would make the price drop another $7 canadian. Now I see why the guy didn't list shipping.

Don't know what it costs to purchase heavy-duty boxing and other needed materials to protect and wrap 35 to 40 lbs but $8.00 to purchase all the material/supplies etc. and run it down for shipping don't seem all that bad to me.

I've noticed some "interesting"

fees using the shipping calculator. I used to think, probably naively, that the calculator was a good way to make sure that you didn't get taken on shipping. Recently one seller had the calculator, & the shipping for one item was $15.95. Another seller had the same item, a two pack, with a flat shipping rate of $6.99. I'm guessing that the first seller was manipulating (make that lying about) the weight. I'm seeing this more & more often.

I used eBay's Ask the seller a question to ask about the shipping fee, & I received a computer generated generic reply akin to "thank you for your interest, & we'll send a personal response as time permits." They didn't, & won't, get my business.

Guys, how about posting ebay usernames for these folks so we know what to expect if we bid on saws from them.

You wanna talk about stupid shipping? I looked at an auction for a gas cap for the quad, with a buy-it-now price of $5. But... he wanted $17.00 for shipping and handling... for a freakin' GAS CAP!! 1/2" thick, maybe 3" around...

At least you may get your saws. The fellow I eBay'd my 041 super either hasn't shipped it or never had it. Haven't recieved any mail back about shipping. Been 20 days since it was paypal'd.

Ranchero50,
Make sure you file a complaint twith Paypal and Ebay soon. I think you only have 30 days after the auction closes to file a complaint with either in order for them to get involved.

Most of my large Macs, and the 2100 Homey, came from Wash. Ore.,or nothern Cal.,and figured out to about $1. per lb.That mod 73,is heavy as lead ,ran one, years ago.Brutish low end torque.

Posting the names of questionable ebayware

sellers sounds good, but are there any legal ramifications to consider? I know that I've previously mentioned Justdavid99, & others have mentioned goosehunter (I'm not sure if that's his full seller name). Suppose we all made posts re bad eBay experiences (related to arborism, tree care, logging, saws, etc), & mentioned the sellers exact eBayware name. That way we could come to AS, do a search using the seller's name, & see what experiences others have have had with that seller. This could also work for good experinces.

One downside is we could wind up listing a fellow AS member as a "bad" seller. Also I find that the condition of chainsaws is very subjective; what a professional saw user & harry homeowner considers good or average condition can differ greatly. And someone here could use the posting to settle personal grudges, real or imagined.

Seems like the ebay feedback system all ready covers this. When I look at buying anything, first I look at the users feedback. I focus on anything negative, and look for trends. I also look at the feedback of the people who left negative feedback, and see if there are any trends there as well, as some unfortunate users get negative feedback because some people are always negative, unhappy, and dissatisfied. From all this I decide if the seller is someone I want to do business with. I also look at any items the user has dealt with in the past that are like what I'm considering to bid on, and pay special attention to those auctions. I wouldn't be likely to bid on a chainsaw from someone who normaly sells dolls. Everyone I have dealt with so far has been honest and helpful.

Tony M, you make some excellent points,

& in general I agree with you. The thing about eBay feedback is it's VERY limited in that you don't get a much space to explain youreslf. I've had a couple of recent situations where I wanted to leave negative (or at best neutral) feeback, but eBay just doesn't provide adequate space for me to fully explain myself. These were gray area situations, where my experience & feedback need some explanation. I received items that weren't so bad that I wanted to return them, but I certainly felt that the sellers misrepresented them. I have time on both purchases; I haven't yet decided how to proceed.

That's true. Maybe a better idea would be for those looking to buy a saw could post what they are looking for in the used equipment forum, and state that they are searching on ebay. AS members could PM the person and warn to stay away from certain ebay sellers. I seem to see the same bunch of folks selling the higher end saws. It might be better to just post sellers that you have had good experiences with.

This all seems to be all true about feedback on ebay and they way those buy and sell. You just dont buy a chainsaw from dollar store and hope it works.I have had some bad deals on ebay as well and some have been with stupid people that just cant read and only want to make a buck.

shipping

bought a saw a while back on ebay,a 090.paid almost 50 usd for shipping to canada.paid almost 50 canadian when it came to my door.now fed ex sent me a bill for 184 dollars.what for i got no clue.

Over-taxing on used saws

$185 for I don't know what for? Well; our leader Paul Martin registered his Steamship corp in the Carribean so he doesn't pay his share of taxes, and I'm sure all his Cronies do the same. So I guess that leaves us, the "working ants" like us to "pick up the slack", paying tax on used items again and again.
