Found a PM605 at a local pawn shop. Really well worn condition. Broken plastic handle spliced with racer (duct) tape. Don't feel like it has good enough compression (but I've been wrong before). Bar is 18 or 20.

Would it make a good project saw provided I can get it CHEAP?

I won't buy/trade for it without a compression check.

What are the important things (i.e. hard to get) to look for? Parts made of 'unobtainium'.

Like I need a saw I can barely pick up. (18.3# w/20" bar)

Just rushed home to bid on the 42 inch Cannon bar only to arrive 2 minutes too late. Hope one of you guys got it. If it is any good, it went for a reasonable price $41.00 and $17.00 shipping.

I've never cut a "cookie" before but I made some 40" by 12" ones since my last post as the yard boss said he wanted 12" stove wood out of the poplar. I left with 9 or 10 more to cut; most will be from the butt so they'll get bigger as I go. I ask him how much wood had been delivered so far this Fall to needy families and he said around 115 loads. He expects we'll do 700 to 800 loads before Spring. Last year was 450+. There are a lot of folks hurting in this economy.

I hope a chain question is acceptable on this thread. I don't know what I got yesterday from the Husky dealer for the 125 but I'm spending almost as much time sharpening as I am cutting. Granted the wood has a dirty side but I cut worse all the time. I'll pull it off and let you guys know what it is.

Nice pics Ron. I missed out on that one and the two 32" Mac RN's there too (listed by the same seller). They all went for more reasonable money than Mac RN bars usaualy do. I'm pissed at myself because I forgot to set up snipes on those auctions as I had meant to before we took off on a weekend family trip Saturday morning. I found those auctions shortly before leaving for work Friday afternoon, and didn't have time to set up the snipes before heading to the salt mine. Got home tired and late (early Sat moring) and crashed out without getting on the computer. Woke up shortly before we drove out. I had intended to set up the snipes before we drove to Sacramento (kid's Tae Kwan Do tourniment).....but forgot in the rush of getting going with too little sleep. Remembered when I we got home this evening........and had that sinking feeling as I checked on the auctions. Oh well....:censored:


Seller sez it's a Remington in the listing, and I believe he's correct. I have a Remington made Wards that looks similar to that saw.

Me and my big mouth...

A few days ago I told Randy (in one of the threads here.............maybe this one) that I was avoiding the X-10 family saws because I was happy with my XL-12's and didn't need another saw family to support in that displacement range. I was proud of myself for avoiding all the X-10 Macs listed on CL lately.



Well........................I ended up with one anyways. A fellow near me zipped me an email Friday morning as I was searching for McCulloch bars (see my post above), saying he had three old Mac's that he'd sell me for $20 total (plus he wanted me to 'look at' his Super XL-Automatic). This was an answer to my CL ad.

I took off to go to his place before getting ready to go to work. Cut the #### out of my trigger finger when a platic box I was moving in the back of the truck (to make room for saws) broke. Cleaned that up, drove to his place, and got is Homelite to run (though it needs a carb kit for the Wally SDC). Packed up the three saws, zipped home, quickly cleaned up, and took off for the salt mine. Forgot to set up the snipes for those Big-McCulloch RN bars......:censored:


What'd I come home with for my trouble (time, $20, cut finger, being slightly late for work, and missing the RN Bar feebay auctions)???

1)A dirty but complete looking non-super 250, with a short 18-20"ish RN bar that looks like a Remington (has the two 'plates' that attach the roller nose to the rest of the bar like the 12" RN on my Remington SL-9). Haven't measured it or cleaned off the crud yet to check for markings. Compression feels great. Haven't checked the P/C yet. Tilly HL carb. No bumper spikes. Stack muffler. Looks like I'll need an AF cover for it. The one that's there is useable, but ugly. No visible numbers stamped on the bottom of the block at all...

2)A poorly repainted McCulloch 35 or 35A (SN above the fuel cap has paint and crud on it, so I don't know if it's an "A" yet) . Yes I have another damn watering can! Feels 'crunchy' when I pull it through like there's rust in the jug or bearings. If the tank bottom is better than the one on my current 35A, then 'll pull parts off of this one to use on it, as that saw has a good P/C and bearings.

It has the larger plug door like my current 35A. Half wrap handle bar. Actualy has "35" cast on the side with the Goose. My current 35A has the round emblem with the Goose, but no "35". Short (16-18") bar with the oval McCulloch emblem and 1/2" chain.

Don't know the condition of the diaphragms on this one. It still has an AF (unlike my current 35A which had a 'rag special'). A fellow here needs a 33/35 gearbox, and I'll probably ship one of my gearboxes to him for Christmas, instead of sending a complete powerhead to him and having him pay to ship the whole pig like we'd planned. I'll send the carb assembly from one of these to Joe S. so he can work up some diaphragms for this saw series.:givebeer:

3)A clean looking ProMac 10-10. One of this series finaly found it's way into my collection dang it. Wears an 18 or 20" bar. Compression feels great. It has the SDC carb (thank God I don't have to mess with a bullfrog). Looks to be complete, except it is missing the chainbreak handle. I can see the end of the band sticking out, but haven't pulled the cover to see if it's missing the spring or other parts. Looks like parts were removed. Don't see anything broken. There's a shaft stickin' out the side...

Have had zero time to look at these saws since I got them. Haven't even taken numbers off of them, looked in exhaust ports, or measured the bars. They're still locked in the shell on the back of my diesel Ford from when I ran home with them before work. I'll take a peek at them tomorrow moring.

For the ProMac 10-10 I'll at least need a chainbreak handle, if not other bits for that contraption. Jenn has expressed cautious interest in learning to run a saw (for GTG's and such). Was gonna teach her with one of my XL12's, but may well go with the 10-10 instead since it's the only saw I have with a chainbrake (other than the "non-GTG material" PM320). For that reason I need to fix it. Then I can give it to her....:D

Guess I need an IPL for the ProMac 10-10 so I know what parts are missing from the chainbrake assembly...

Dang Mark, you found yourself a very nice and rare gem there....congrats ! Only a true Mac Man like yourself deserves to have a BP model... well, I'll have dibbs on the first one sold in europe I guess....if the Mac gods will have their way of course :angel:

I haven't been posting much lately as I am very busy with the new job....and I even haven't started travelling yet. No time for saws this year and the next one I fear. Them germans are killing me....but their equipment is simply the best....:poke:

For 20$ I think you did ok:). I think you made out on the 250 alone. Congrats, and look forward to seeing the rest of the x-10 saws to follow.

I'm glad to see some of you know about Wallenburg Sales, Harry has helped me out a few times in finding the correct parts. Man i would love to take a walk ( with escort of course ) thru his warehouse!!:cheers:

But his prices are far higher than others. And he
also has limited inventory. You place an order
then he gets on the phone and finds it. Gets
shipped to him then shipped to you.

The top cover has a small piece broken out as does the air filter cover but neither will keep the saw from working. This saw was obviously used quite a bit, but not severly abused. I have a NOS air filter which will be needed as the one in the saw has a hole in it. All in all I am pretty happy with how the week ended...

Yours seems to be complete, which is a real plus!
Here's the BillG BP1 I got a while ago. Pretty much complete now execept for the primer button. I don't have the right bar yet, bet this one fits and looks nice.
The saw will not run because of compression issues, I put a OK used piston in it but the rings are shot.

Very nice indeed. Like the saw I found that one has seen some use which in my opinion adds to the real character.

I did manage to spend a few minutes with mine last night. A little cleaning of the points and it had a decent spark. I measured compression around 100 PSI (somewhat disappointing) and could get it to pop with a shot of prime but it never seemed to want to take off.

Do you have a source for a new spark plug? Mine works, sort of but I fear the insulator around the center electrode is ready to come apart and I would prefer not to have a bunch of porcelain flying around in the combustion chamber.

Other parts will be needed no doubt. If you have a source for the gaskets & diaphragms in the carburetor, would you mind sharing in a PM?
