Next up, a 33/35 style welded muffler, only two mounting screws on this one.

And now the two screw 200/250 etc. style, two screws hold it together and two screws mount it to the block. These tended to be somewhat cheaper mufflers that are often very badly rusty or burned out.

The stack, work on virtually any saw if you have the right gasket.

And the winner is the three piece clamp style muffler with three mounting screws. This is the replacement part for the rectangular mufflers - part number 68240.

The inlet of regular large frame and cart mufflers all appears to be smaller than the 105/125 port. This is why I have been looking for 105/125 mufflers and was so elated when I found two. I never thought to take off and take a good look at the only 125 muffler I have. Well, I did tonight and it has straight sides with an opening the same width as my round mufflers but slightly longer in lenght. Go figure as to why the inlet doesn't match the port. Ron

Mark, thanks for your pictures. As usual, I learned something new. I thought I had a 105/125 muffler but after looking at your pictures I believe I have a 700/800 rectanglar muffler. I assume the proper 125 muffler has an inlet that matches the port. I'll know when my new ones arrive. Have you compared inlets? Ron

Mark, do you know if this type muffler came on the 640? I am still trying to id my father's saw from memory. It had this type of muffler - I believe from day one. Ron

Ron - If your 660 has the third mounting screw tapped the 68240 muffler will work. My IPL shows a two screw type muffler and most of them did not have the third mounting screw but some did.

My dad liked power as much as we do, so he could have had an 840. I just don't remember the shroud. And I know he didn't have any spare change to throw around. I guess I'll never know for sure unless I should happen across a picture of it. Thanks, Ron

The 660 is a front tank gear drive. Basically the same as the 650 you traded for that S-550.

I think you nailed it. I never would have thought of that. Strange that Charles' phone censored it. My Droid-X doesn't censor any cusswords out. There's a non-saw forum that I've posted swear words on from my phone. Maybe there's a setting in the phone he can change (like disabling the damn auto-complete).

Looks like acres site is wrong, then. I based the 660 info on acres site.

Mark, thanks again. The 640 is back in the running as I recall him replacing the band shown in your post (nut and screw type) with a hose clamp styled band as shown in your NOS post. Ron

It seems that mufflers were interchanged quite often, and aren't the surest method of ID'ing a saw. Here are the two from the 640s i have in the garage.

The big one has some farmer-mods on the mounting holes.

I have been trying to figure out what model this is, can not seem to find any numbers or stickers. Need to get some parts for it but....I really like this saw, it came with a Mac 28" bar. Anybody have idea of where the numbers are hidden on this beast?

There should be a tag just under the air filter cover.
SP81E will have electronic ignition. Ron

Not so fast. Just because there is no tag doesn't mean it's not a SP81E. Measure the bore and stroke and look for a set of points under the flywheel. If no points and b & s = 2.06 and 1.5 then it's a SP81E. If points but same b & s then it could be a SP 80 or SP81. If b & s equals 1.875 and 1.375 then it is a SP 60. If b & s equals 2.00 and 1.375 then it's a SP70. With the full wrap bars it is more likely a SP80, 81 or 81E. Ron

Hey Ron ... my SP 81 has a black AF cover .... or is that irrelevant?
