All you guys thinking about emissions and fuel economy , let me give you a hint. Only a hint, 'cos I don't know the actual numbers (yet).

The 440 and similar machines spit up to to 35% of the gas mix as "unburnt".. Nice.. The stratocharging gets a bunch of that buring... Burning is combustion... combustion is what pushes the damn piston down.

I'll get some numbers for y'all, not that one or two will believe them, but it will sure fuel (pun intended) a new **** fight.

Maybe Ben Walker has some insight into the general processes or numbers in strato verses non-strato engines?

Very good and interesting points Andy, and yes, I would like to hear Bens take on it as well!
I didn't buy any of my saws fo fuel mizzing just for workhorses, but with the price of gas maybe I should have thought a little more about that on my purchases:monkey:

Fuel burned = work (power).

If you don't burn it, you need more for the same work.

If you burn it (verses spitting it out), better gas economy, and, lower emissions.

I thought most of the fuel savings was from using fresh air instead of air mixed with fuel for purging the cylinder of spent gasses.

...and that stratocharging just packed more fuel/air mix into the crankcase...and then into the cylinder.

I am slowly grasping this myself, I take it as the "puff" of air, is on the exauhst side, forcing part of the unburnt fuel back into the cylinder, with a new charge coming in from the intake side as well, focing the engine to re-burn part of the exaust gas that was already burnt.
Clear as mudd?

I'm really curious how Lake & Thall can be accused of "selling". If I understand correctly, Stihl does not allow a dealer to push/sell his saws outside of his territory? Thus no internet sales, etc....

Now, other than a few guys on this forum that may be actually in their territories, what do they stand to gain by "selling" to the rest of us?

Hey, I can honestly say I haven't sold a single 441 to anyone that even knows what AS is!! I can extend that to just about everything sold though the store! AS what?
