I'll sure try. I've got a bit better way to transport the bunch I have this year and many new ones. I do have a heritage festival in southern VA that weekend, so as usual it's decision time. Hope to see all of you again! :yourock:

Steve, Whats the date of Heritage festival? Was telling Mark, that Mothers day is the 8th, so might change which weekend to have our Poulan GTG. I'm certainly open for suggestions on dates.
Gregg,

Welcome, Cattailforge! As Mark mentioned, that 44 won't make you rich, but I've had the opportunity to work on a few of the old sand cast saws. I do like the gear drive/bow saws like your 44. It takes a different breed to work on these older saws but IMO they're "Poulan simple" while presenting their own unique challenges, especially the FB starters and the HL carbs. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the info. I can't quite figure out how to post a photo of the saw...it's in great condition. The story goes that the guy who originally bought it was too proud to return it when it was just too much for him to handle! It's in the best shape of any saw that age I've seen. I also have an old Sears/David Bradley U4G that's in pretty good condition. I think I'm already hooked on collecting!

I use Xnview. Many other ways to do it.

Poulan 3400

I just finished putting new rings, fuel lines, modified muffler and a custom dawg. What do you think of the muffler, the output hole is 5/8ths. Do you think it's big enough, or should I add another hole?
Thanks Kevin

Gregg,

That's the same weekend of the heritage festival, Gregg. Happened the same way last year and you know which one I came to.

Not sure where you are in VA, CTF, but be aware that there's a GTG (several AS members) in Kenbridge, VA near South Hill on March 19th and a group of chainsaw junkies (several AS members) will be at the heritage festival in South Boston, VA on May 7th. Would like to see you show up at either/both of these events.

Kevin, I used 3/4" ID tubes on the ones that I did. I don't know that 5/8's is good or not. Might be just as good. I'm sure is a drastic improvement over stock for sure. Did you close off the rear outlets? I do on mine.

That looks pretty darn good but I would be a little concerned with it sticking out so far that it might get hit on something and bend.

I know with the bend, its hard to weld them those tubes that short to the muffler body, but I did some by welding them on the inside of the muffler body and that seemed to work pretty well that way.

I also like the little bit longer dog, that should work well. How is she running? I'll bet like a champ.

Hey guys, made a video of the 245 I was working on and posted pictures of earlier in the week. I have a shortage of wood around here right now, but do have some big stuff coming this week, so there will be more to follow.

Yes I did close up the oem holes, I think I'm going to punch a 1/4" hole just below the new pipe and weld a shield over it. It should make a nice rumble. It's welded on there preety good and will need a serious hit to bend or break it off. I also took about 2mill off the top of the rear heatshield, it was covering the exhaust port. Every little bit helps. I have not started it yet due to a severe pinched nerve and tendon issue in my left elbow, probably from pull starting a homelite zip the other day. .
Thanks for the input.

I don't know the 5/8's might work just fine.

I didn't really mean bend the tubes, I really as much meant maybe bending the muffler body as its alot thinner then your tube.

Let me compliment you on your fabricating, you do nice work! I need to get off my duff and learn to use my tig rig. Getting hard to teach a old dog new tricks though.

I'm not even going to ask where you aquired the what appears to be stainless butt weld 90 at. :laughn:

I got lazy on the exhaust when I rebuilt my Craftsman 3.7/3700 and built a deflector on it. I think it works well and looks fine that way.

Mine got a slight port job and no base gasket on it, and its pretty healthy.

You didn't get lazy at all, that deflector looks oem. Great job you did there. My good friend works maintenance at a food processing plant. Whenever I ask him to did up some parts for me, he brings me stainless. I see what your saying about the factory muffler part bending. I can't wait til I can fire it up for a long run and get some colors on the exhaust. I'm thinking it's going to turn a little purple. What do you use instead of a base gasket? I bought the gasket kit from a guy on ebay, The base gasket was very thin, I was very impressed with the kit in general for 11 dollars. I'll check the squish soon, I can't find my solder. Have you ever tried a larger venturi hdb carb on one of your poulans? I see they make bigger ones, but I can't find out what they were used on.
hdb 1 through 5.

Very nice. You laid that down smooth. I on the other hand rely on my grinder LOL

When i did mine i forgot the machine was set for some big ibeam. Looked terrible, and ive welded for 5 years!

I went and picked up the two 306's & 203 today that I found on Craigslist.
All seem to be in pretty decent shape. Havn't done a thing to them yet, just took some pics. MS460Woodchuck, was right, as I suspected too, that the older, lighter colored one says Thirty O Six on it.

The 203 even has an original Poulan roller nose bar on it. The newer 306 has a decent sprocket nose bar. I'll post the pics in a couple posts.

Gregg,

Greg, you did well there. A nice pair of 306's a very early one and a very late one.
The later one is probably electronic ign.

That 203 looks good as well. Mine came with its original 16" roller bar also but I think it may end up on the restored 306A. Either that or I might use the 19" roller that I have.

Also look when you can and see how much smaller the high tension lead is on the 203 but then the early 306 has the same. Makes me think more that I was right about the early 306 still haveing the ND ign like the 200 series.
