Thanks for more info. That coincides with what I THOUGHT I knew. Do you know if an open-channel piston was used in any later 5-cubers? Maybe there wasn't enough piston to work with, as Timberdollars suggested.

I have never seen a cut out piston for the 5 cube saws.

Nope its a 525, 2.06" bore (52mm)
UPDATE: found a hole between oil res. and crankcase looks like corrosion, so its parts at this point. could have it welded but we'll just leave it for now.
BECAUSE I have a complete 525 enroute from AS member tomdcoker. So the wait game is in effect.
I'm still kinda dumbfounded about the boost port 525 thing, the piston doesn't have the cut out notch for flow like a 655bp does?????? the 655bp cylinder is the same just bored more, this thing has THICK cylinder walls (for boring) and is heavy. INTERESTING!
525bp WHY are they not labeled as such?

Duane

I was wondering who got the 525, I got the 455 cylinder he had listed.

Pioneer'ed myself crazy

Ok I've managed to swap/barter/trade/buy/ and beg a bunch of different Pioneers that are heading my way soon.
Yesterday: 525 from As member, new P42 western P/C, 455 third port cylinder, 455 piston, P38 parts case-good P/C and case.
Last night: P42W ? maybe we'll see price was right, full wrap, mostly black handles, filter cover, cylinder looks odd!!
New Today: P61 Western, runner, complete, P62 parts saw, missing few goodies, ( i have off the 525 parts saw) finalizing tonight!!!, workin on a P50 Western too

I'm loosin track of what route I'm going with these!!!!

Anything BAD about a p50 I'm not to used to that old a model yet.

P50

No experience w/ a P50 - probably can be made to run like a turpentine cat, although the two-piece ignition would likely be hard to replace.

Lots of experience with P51 - I cut more with it than any other saw I ever had. I'm sure someone knows more than I do, but the ignition is the only major difference I know of.

Turpentine cat (for those too young to know of these things): Naughty boys used to find a way to get a little turpentine on the hind end of a cat and then just stand back and watch how far and fast it would run. How did video games ever catch on?

My 45s/ 455s are thick ring. They seem okey dokey. My 655 is thick ring too. 51/ 52 is thin ring, as was the 42W. Thick rings are supposed to be tougher, but thin ones have always lasted pretty well for me.

funny my piston I bought for a 455 is thin ring, haven't gotten it yet but seen picture. Thin rings have less friction means MORE POWER!!! thick seal better but cause more heat easier to break or score.
I always though thick were better but remembered from my FORD days that HiPo Ford H.O. engines used thin low tension rings and they worked GREAT even NITRO'd and blown!!!
Thin ring saws seem to stay around and make history!!!! think of all of them. But thick ones are cheap and easy to get.

Not to worry! Not to worry! I am WAY outside my budget and now have to sell some saws to recover (just can't figure out which ones)

Big case reeds

Boyesen finally got back to me today about reeds for Pioneer saws. They have 5-6 cube reeds in stock or ready to make and send out. No minimum order requirement. They sent me the picture of the one they have with measurements and is correct for my 525.

Just passing it on

I will inquire more about 4 cubers

The P50 is one of my favorites. They were my first Pioneers and what started the obsession. Older ones have a flat air filter cover, they draw air from a vent in front of the top handle. The older ones also have left handed threads on the flywheel side, a bridged exhaust port and 3 piece ign.
Later model 50's are set up basically the same as the p60/61.

I got this one from a member here about a month ago. It's a later model. My other P50's are the early ones with the flat cover.
