Got to 81 degrees (F dammit....not C) here today Chris. Why don't you send that P-62 out here for some California sunshine???:D

Somehow I doubt that John is ever going to let that saw go any farther west than Ohio.

Nice saws Chris, I hope to find a P62 someday. I had some Pioneer gear out today as well, Ill get some pics up.
I actually turned my computer on for the first time in a while to get a good look at the saws instead of my ipod.

Pioneer tools

I had this toolbox out today and did some inventory and organizing. It's something I really treasure in my collection. I got it off ebay a while ago and probably outbid a few of you, but I had to have it. It's got tons of useful tools not only for pioneer saws, I believe it was from a shop in Eau Claire, WI. It's got about 90% of the tools from the tool list and whoever owned this stamped all the part numbers on everything, even some homemade tools. It's got leak test kits for the large and small P series, a vac/pressure tester, pin pushers/pullers, worm gear tools, seal removers and installers, points tools, way to much to list. If you want to see a close up of something or want dimensions for a tool say the word.

Yup, thats just about the coolest damn thing I've ever seen. Once in a lifetime purchase right there.

Your right, it's a once in a lifetime find and I believe I got a great deal. I'm glad I got it before the pioneer bug started going around. Lol. It sure does make rebuilding these a breeze. I hope to find more and complete the set.

525

Received my other 525 today, its worn out and just parts now, most if not all is going on my other parts 525 for a complete saw.

My newest 525 is newer by serial number than my first 525. First 525 is a boost port saw! this newest one is NOT!!!! its raised exguast that is non bridged???? confused again!!!!:msp_confused:
newest one has fiberglass reed first one did NOT:msp_confused:

My newest one has a WORN out completely piston and cylinder, no chrome left, ridge on what little is there both top and bottom, pistons ring lands are wide enough for thick rings (PLUS) in spots, ring gap was 3/8" funny still had some compression!!

Back together tomorrow with new bearings, seals, gaskets, Boost Port Cylinder, new piston/rings, and a SDC 85 from a Mac.

They must have done something different every month when building those saws, depending on what parts were handy. Keep us posted how she turns out!

Finally finished this thing up today. Had a 2 week delay getting over a lousy cold. Started with a filthy but complete RA. Had good compression but no spark.

Think I found why the previous owner quit running it.

I made the decision to completely tear it down for seals and bearings. Carby throttle shaft (not the choke) was stuck. Go figure... Stole a FM starter set from a junker Canadien 270. Oiler pump needed a new o-ring before it would work properly.

Now, I'm not a big fan of stripping and repainting saws when plenty of original paint is left, so all this saw got was a real good bath after I tore it down. I suspect this saw spent years in an open barn or shed with the flywheel facing out. I'll deal with the little bit of corrosion on the covers soon enough.

Most of the instruction tag is still legible on the cylinder shroud.

Nice little touch, the bar is original IEL. There is an 'IEL' stamp right by the bar slot.

Boxes and Boxes of Pioneers

Ok my many boxes of Pioneer saws have started to arrive. I traded into 6 this last week. But am now even more confused :msp_confused: about these saws than before. It seems every LIKE model saw I get has a different cylinder/carb configuration. I have many now but have a few questions about these.

P42 parts saw, NOT REALLY its all good with cracked handle. It says P42 on it, lime green, looks all OEM and all casting codes say 1983, has serial # and model tag but no model # listed. Has great piston and cylinder BUT! its a NON bridged exguast unlike my P42 Western. Looks identical to a 405 cylinder but date casting on its a 83 too???? And single black coil of slightly different design than newer stuff but same mounting. Tilly carb. No decomp. AND BONUS! A BOYESEN TWO STAGE REED!Any ideas??? HP maybe?
P50 Western runner, torn apart to put new rings in it. Dated 1981 on TAG, all good but interesting part is it has a FORGED piston of slightly different design than newer stuff. YES Forged!!! smooth surface inside no sand casting marks and thicker, heavy too. SDC 53, Anyone else seen this?

I lead a sheltered life, so there's all kinds of things I haven't seen. Including the forged piston and SDC 53.

Seems like my 42 Western had no exhaust port bridge. If it did, I got rid of it when it was new. Seems like it didn't have de-comp either. (Not going out to the shed to look tonight. Woulda plugged the de-comp if it had one, anyway.) Maybe your Tilly was a retro-fit?

No blasphemy intended about good ol' Pioneers, but it still seems like they must have started on Monday mornings by grabbing whatever was handy in the parts bins.

How is the 525 coming along? Too busy with other things here to even look at a saw.

Congrats on your growing family!
