I was with sawdust on the muffler, but some of those are interchangeable. The cylinder flange is the same, a lot of times they just changes the shape of the deflector. I had the same issue with the choke lever on my 770 until I realized that the Tillotson carb was not OEM. It was originally shipped out of the factory with a Carter carb. The choke on/off works in the opposite direction ofthe Tillotson. My giveaway was that the H/L screws could not be adjusted thru the side. Some of the older production saws had the Carter, then tillotson was installed in the later ones. I have no idea what the ratio is(carter to Tilly), or when, during production, the switch was made. It's either a Bantum or a 660. Glad it's a runner. Your pics of the blue Mystery Monster are a lot better than the ones in the listing.

All great points Crane, but there is another fly in the ointment: the upper handle bar mount. My Bantams as well as my 660s have a different upper mount. The angle is approximately 60 degrees vs the sharper angle of the Ward's. This matches the 754 mount. That being said I threw it into the mix as well.

I'd be interested in the Carter/Tilly ratio also.......but I'd be more interested in acquiring a Carter ND now so I can move on with a project. LOL.

Wards/Remington

The two tapped holes for the handle brace are in the end of the handle and a hole for the stud on the other end next to the muffler. I miss having that brace on there for starting.

What really suprised me is that it sports 3/8" chain instead of .404" or 7/16". Havn't counted the teeth on the spur yet.

Ran 3/4 tank of 32:1 fuel thru him this morning and tried to cut but the chain is only up to rubbing hard on the wood.

He was having trouble once the fuel level got below 1/2 so we will put a kit in the carb and replace the filter and line.

Drum/spur is 8 tooth.

If I didn't know better, I'd say that is a subtle hint for me to drag out that big ole Bantam G, and tear it down. Nope, it has a good carb; just missing carb box cover. The Carter I was referring to is for another project I'm starting (not a Remington, but really cool nonetheless). The 'G' will have its day in the sun soon, I hope. I'll keep you posted.

SL-4 auto oiler

The last time I used it about 3 years ago it started smoking quite a bit,but it was still running and cutting.

Darn betcha it smokes. Check valve in the line from the engine crankcase has turned to black goo.

Anyone know where to get a new one?

Remington #66383. (Parts saw is a manual oiler)

Emptied and rinsed the oil tank with mineral spirits. Fired him up and he runs/cuts fine. Filled the neighborhood with smoke for a while.

He has a new loop of Stihl low profile chain on him. What's up with the low profile? Owner error?

Nice score! You managed two models....the red one is a PL and the other an SL. If that other parcel gets to you, I bet I can come up with a red clutch half for you. I'll check on a check valve also. I'm going off the grid at the end of the week. Heading to warmer climates for a Christmas break. I'll see what I have and get in touch in the New Year.
BTW, that is the elusive air filter nut you are sporting on the SL. we were talking about it when you got the Wards/SL-11.

Will it be up on your site when it's done???(your current creation). As for the "G", you know I just had to ask......:msp_biggrin:

I suspected the broken one was a PL but the trashed clutch cover has SL 4 on it. There is no model/SN tag.

I'm not going to repair the broken one, so no panic on any parts for it. Besides the clutch cover, the recoil starter has all the small bits missing. Cylinder/piston condition is a large unknown.

I can always plug the line and use the SL 4A as a manual oiler.

the tag on the bottom of the recoil housing is gone? with the smooth filter cover and Remington sticker, that to me says later model PL made by Desa. Either way, it was a good score. As for the 3/8 low pro, I've never come across one, it would be easy to find the sprocket. I wonder if it was switched because the owner found it easier to get chain (low pro) at Walmart or Lowes, rather than a saw shop. Just thinking out loud

Yup, you are right. There is a tag on the bottom of the recoil cover. DESA made in Toronto. SN 5127057351. By the spacing I bet 5-12-'70 and number 57351 (different fonts). No model number. He pulls only 110psi dry and 120 wet (WD-40).

On the runner, I'll have to pull the bar and check the sprocket. I doubt anyone changed it to specifically run LP chain.

Runner cranks 145psi, so we are good.

Yup, along with some others. The Mall 6 will take a whole page if not two. It's big and beautiful..

OH you gotta post that Mall here when it's done!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want one soo bad. I'm playing with a not so bad 2MG right now, but will have to post some pics when I get back as I have questions.

Carl,

That broken PL-4 is offering up some interesting questions...................I was under the impression that all American made PL series saws were red/white, while all the Canadian made saws were red and black, but with the s/n tag still attached to a red/white recoil............:msp_confused: Most of my Canadian PL's have the date stamp somewhere between 68-70. I have never seen the date preceding the serial # on anything but the saws made in Toronto. That is the one frustrating thing about Remington, never any rhime or reason to follow as per paint specs.
Can anyone shed any light on this???

Clearly the red/white PL-4 was made in Toronto. Its' clutch cover is now on the SL-4 evidence by the rattle can paint job. The model/SN tag is on the SL-4 just above the handle brace.

I see now the original owner picked up the PL for its' clutch cover and likely stripped the starter dog stuff also.

B.T.W. Several Mall NOS items are on the evilbay.

What is the Remington number on the bar? Guage? Approximate length?

Reason I'm asking is I have a NOS roller for one.
Carl.
