:help: On the bigger diameter trees the sloped cut must be started higher. If its 6'+ you will have to stand on the top step of an eight foot ladder on level ground. If the ground is steep its usually easier to just go ahead and use climbing gear to start the cut.
I think that I read on AS or somewhere that the formula for finding out how high to start your slope cut is tree diameter x 3.1463 - (your height)

There was a young Tommy named Hall
His brain's not too big, but his ballz
His saws start with a drop,
never met a tree we wou'n't top;
And, hey, a 45 backcut to fall.

T. Hall, he sells a lot of Stihl
Full of zeal, does he seal the deal
But using the saws
should be against the law.
But then, trial lawyers need a meal.

His name is T. Hall, he's a hack.
He thinks that he's got Gypo's knack.
With ugly back cuts galore,
he avoids neatly the gore
By wearing (free) ear muffs and chaps.

And lest, I forget:

Halarious!

Tom took his trusty old Stihl,
made a hundred dollars for real,
backcut at 45,
lucky to be alive,
cut at 90 so the bells do not peal.

Joatman, THAT is just PLAIN HALARIOUS! The same with the rest of your song poems(I don't know how to multi quote).     :ices_rofl: :ices_rofl:
And I'm out of bullets too, dang.

Now if this is true, what am I to think, when just a few post ago I asked why such a back cut was dangerous? I was a pulling on a tag line for a tree cutter that made a back cut like that. The tree barber chaired and fell right slam through the owners shed, splitting it in half! (he also made too shallow a directional cut) When the thing started to go, all the cutter could do was to hollar for us holding the tag line to PULL! which didn't make no difference at all. I dropped the line and went a running the other way. But now I'm being led to believe, by somebody I so admire, that this practice is acceptable? I'll just sit back and see if I can learn from some these comments.

The sloped back cut is just plain friggin' dangerous... those that use it are luckily getting away with it. Plain and simple... don't do it. It will bite you one day...;)

The tree stood proud, the tree stood tall,
It knoweth not its impending fall,
no clue from backcut,
a 45 in the butt,
another felling from the great Tommy Hall.

Got some big pine today free, last cut was at 36" at crown and 28" across chunks. got 2 times as much not in pic. Glad i didnt have to drop it beside the house it was at. all ready was chunked up, just had to get it.
Word got around i wanted some big pine for my throwing axe targets.

yup!

LOL...Like a guy that does one on purpose just 'cause he knows it'll drive us all nuts? If it hadn't been for the goofy back cut it would have been just another ho-hum tree on the ground picture. Tom got us good! :ices_rofl:
One thing to think about...with a deep enough face and an angled back-cut you can get a barber-chair from the face if the wind sets the tree back on the back cut. Then things just kind of explode and the tree goes where you really don't want it. Don't ask me how I know this LOL.

Yup, tom got us really good. Including me. I will never believe another word that :jester: says! Yup, he was right it drove us all nuts! We'll get him back! It's amazing I didn't think of doing something like this, that is really creative!:hmm3grin2orange: :biggrinbounce2: ;)
