Rich you have to remember that just because a saw runs in your area doesnot mean it will run in another area, Art and I have been over this already. In my area a 346 will crush a 242/246 because of the torque it will make in my air, down where Art lives it will be totally opposite because he has alot better air living near the ocean, I can set a 346 here at 14.500 send it to him and it will be turning close to 17000 rpm's . With his air being this good he can take a saw that has a higher transfer port number and it will work where here it will not and you can run a higher ext. port number down where he is.

Good info Ed. I was trying to point out was that the 242 has been a fair saw for us, very reliable too!!!

The 242 has not had very much press here. Nice to see some opinions!!!

they didnot sell many 242's around here, they just donot like this area, the older 238 in a speed cut is faster here

The 242 that we run is a decent ltlle saw. But no match for a 346!

I am not sure if this counts but when the very first 084's came out the stihl dealer came to the bush and ask us to demo some saws, he had 064's with him so we did and he asked if there were any saws I wanted to run we had our winter saw contest coming up so I told him to get me the baddest thing he could. So he got one of the first 084's for me to try, well when it got to the dealer he tried it and sent it back to stihl and when it can back and I got ahold of it this thing was strong, I never had the jug off of it but had the muffler off it and it was not ported but it was forsure the fastest saw I have ever got from a dealer. From what I have been told it had a different carb and ignition and the squish was tighten up . I guess I should of kept it but one of my Dads friends wanted to bad

........ I have a husky 246 that is a little screamer as well. Is this basicly the same as a 346?
No not even close!

I dont think a single part will fit, excludind the cutting attachment of course.
The 246 belonged to the 133 family of saws, so its basic construction is dating back to about 1980.
The 346xp was an entirely new construction when it came out in 1999.

Not even bore/ stroke is the same, as the 133 family used 30 mm stroke, and the 346 32.5 mm.
As far as I know the 133 family was the 133se, 234se, 238se, 42, 242xp and 246. Maybe even 42 special?

The 246 was based on the 242, but a larger open port cylinder. 242 was 3.3 hp,15,500 rpm; 246 was 3.1 hp, 15,000 rpm. I would take either saw over a stock 346. A stock 346 is a good saw but doesn't dominate the class down here. I had 3 242/246's and 5 346's.
I think the official hp numbers was the other way around, even though the 242xp was tested at 2.4 kW/3.3 hp bt DLG/KWF in 1997.
I doubt the 246 was open port - could be wrong though...

john,
i could not make it. chris shot me an e-mail but i think the gtg fell on a bad day for me. i am trying to set one up for around here. i don't know if i want to hold my own or just make it the same day as a local show and we go from there. there is a local show in otisville ny that cost $4.00 per class and gives back trophies for 1st,2nd and 3rd. i help with that show so we could compete in thier classes and then put on a show of our own. they need to know ahead of time so they have the cants. if i have it here there is lots of camper space and a local motel for those that can still see to drive when the day ends.
i have two axe targets and the rest of the stuff like log roll, cookie cut, x-cut and so on are easy set-ups. have to see what 2006 brings. if it will be like 2005 i will be traveling to many shows. marty

In the only competition I ever saw, a stock 460 beatem' all...including the 660's. The operator was a teenager. I don't necessarily believe that an MS460 is the fastest saw in the 70cc class, but on that day, an impression was made in my mind. And when I finally started shopping for a bigger saw, I looked at many choices, but the memory of that day drove me to the Stihl shop...and I bought the 460.

SawTroll, I had to put crank bearings in a 246 and the cylinder was open port. I thought they were closed port too.
Thank you, another piece of the puzzle in place.... :)

Do you happen to know about the 42/42Special also?

Can't say about the 42 special from experience, but dealer said it was an open port cylinder, same bore and stroke as 242. Most 42 users here put 242 top ends on when work was needed.

i recently bought a 346 xp ive used similar smaller saws. They aint even close to the 346 xp in cutting speed

Stan - Its kinda ironic that you brought up this thread. I see some similarities in you and the person that started this thread.

I use my 066 more but my 056 M might be faster?

Maybe the coupla 066s I used werent the right model but I know one was an early dual port and my 056magII is faster in hardwood up to about 18". It also doesn't lose much in the real big stuff. As far as fastest saw I guess it depends on the size wood, but here are my impressions in increasing size. 441, 056mII, 125mac(tie with 084), 090 these seem to me to be the fastest saws in the size wood I would use them. I do think the 066dp is very close to my 056mII.
