Just scored a 770G off ebay, has a 28in bar with 1/2" chain on it right now. I was wondering if anybody knew if I could convert to 404 or not and if so if their is a source for the drive spurs or sprockets I guess you could call it for the .404 chain.

Also curious what bar mount pattern it takes, with 95cc's and a 2.8:1 gear reduction I'd love to put something in the high 30" range onto it for big stuff, If its like any of these other old gargantuan's I'll have to modify a bar to fit but was wondering what the best mount to start with is.

Looks like Homelite came out with bars in the +30 range for that saw, in 1/2 inch pitch. I guess you could try to find a bar and chain for it in the size you want. Someone here may have what you need.

Brings back memories of my first saw, a XP1000, lots of hours running that monster. Thanks... Eventually I'll find one to reminisce with. Nice pictures of the 1020 and the XP1000.

Yeah I call it a 1020, but you probably are at least partially right. I'm pretty sure that the handlebars are wrong on both saws, as the red one has a bar that looks more like an 1130G I think, but maybe a XP1000. The faded 1020's handlebar had a bike grip on it originally, probably from a C7 or something.

Thanks for the compliments. They are fun saws to work on.

I'm lookin to get away from the 1/2in pitch and go to .404 so I can use it more and not worry about finding 1/2in pitch chain....I will modify a bar just wondering if anyone knew what the best one to start with was...

I looked on Acres website but couldn't find that bar mount. You might start out with the biggest Homelite bar mount and work from there.

A 770G uses the same bars as most other large frame Homelites such as a Zip, 1050, C-Series (such as a C-5), etc. Go to Acres' site and click "bar patterns". Look at Acres #16. You will see the bar manufacturer's codes for that mount. It's NOT the same as the XL-Series mount (Acres #14), even though both have a 3/8" slot. Some guys have made adaptor plates to use a 14.5mm slot large frame Stihl bar. Think 090, 088, 084, 880, 051, etc.

Also there is no .404 sprocket for gear drive homies but I hear that McCulloch has one and will fit with a little work on the homelite key. All of your big bars should be .63 gauge and it does not matter if you have a roller nose or hard nose what chain you use but if you have a sprocket tip you will have to change the tip.

^ Thanks a ton for the heads up that will save me some time and effort! Looks like i'm off on the hunt for a mac sprocket. Any old mac sprocket or are they all the same??? I'm unfamiliar with the old mac's and homie's but by god I'm about to get acquainted a bit :hmm3grin2orange:

Yes there is a .404 sprocket for the later Homelites, but it is very hard to find. I have a couple of those saws with Oregon 7 spline adapters. The earlier gear drives (990, 7-29) used a gear with the shaft diameter a hair smaller. This gear can replaced with a Mac gear a little key work.

Read thru this thread. Sort of summarizes what I've found.

Yep, my 1130g has a .404 sprocket. Got lucky, it was on there when i bought it.

Local guy has one for 275.00 is the old girl worth it? He say everything works as it should and runs great.

It all depends on what you want. It might also be a possibility he might negotiate down a little on the price. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for it but I'm a tightwad. Vintage saw prices depend on whether you want the saw more than the seller does.

Homelites are red
Homelites are blue
Buy a McCulloch if you want a
different hue.

You forgot three Homelite colors. Green, white, and black. Homelite mixed and matched Red, Black, Blue, White, and Green................sometimes all on the same saw! There were even some yellow Homelites (John Deer labled SXL-AO's, and some private lable hardware store Zips).

I picked up a 550 a couple of weeks ago. The seller said the handle bar was loose and it had a slight fuel leak. Who didn't know the two would be related? :(

I don't think that is the original screw.

Or, factory gaskets.

Anybody have a pic, of the inside of this area? I'm trying to see how thick the tank is. Z
