Leave the rings off the piston and slip on the cylinder. Hold the cylinder in position with on hand and turn flywheel with the other. If there is no bump at top dead center felt then leave the gasket out.
Just to be safe, I 'stick' bits of square toothpicks with grese to the piston crown.

I'm working on a XL-76 and I think the clutch springs are shot. If I put the round plate on with three little bolts the clutch will not release. I could run the saw without the clutch plate but it's probably not a good practice. Sorry photo is out of focus, but springs look too relaxed to me.

Any chance that round cover is slightly concave? Perhaps if it is concave side up the remaining arcs spanning the holes might be long enough to slightly catch on the shoes and hold them after they engage. I find there is a bit of vertical motion on some shoes and they can travel out and up with the centripetal acceleration. Those shoes have a fairly wide foot trapped under the cover and behind the spring insertion point.

You are right about not running the Homelites without the plate. The shoes can start heading outboard and chew up the clutch cover.

The shoes look seated in the pic a far as I can tell. I would take it apart and give it a good cleaning.

What make is the drum as it looks very tight to the shoes?

Put the worn out drum on and see if the issue goes away.

I just acquired a nice looking Super EZ later model for a decent price, only problem is it doesn't have any spark and has the dreaded blue module. I was wondering if any of you Homelite experts would know of a module that might work in place of the original. I have a few Super 2 modules but I haven't tried fitting one to it yet.

I put the blue coil from XL-76 in the oven at 250 for a hour or so and it came back to life. Worth a try.

I'll ask the wife if she has any objections. I've just had the saw for about a day so haven't checked it out much, I'll look at the kill switch and see if it's okay plus I've got a couple of old coils that are blue so Ill see if either of them will work.

I just remembered an old trick of taking the frame off a blue coil and putting it on another one which I had in my junk box. I think the other coil may be from a 10-10 or something like that and it wouldn't fit my EZ so I swapped frames with the two and it had great spark. After fiddling around with the rest of the saw I think I may have a runner. This is a nice size saw for minor tree work around the house so I may take it with me next week to cut some firewood..

Anyone know of a good gas tank sealer? I am having trouble with gas leaking into the bar oil tank on my 550. I tried to separate the tank halves to no avail.

Has anyone got a Super 650 or a 750 crankshaft handy?

Need a diameter reading of the flywheel side and of the PTO side (with the sleeve) ....

Thanks!

Dug through my crap.
Looks like .750 on flywheel side and .625 on the PTO side sleeve.
