I would do a compression test. Like Lou mentioned the rings may not be seated yet. How many hours on the new rings? It could also be a carb issue also. I have both saws also, my 61 has more power than the 51,(but not too noticeable) both have 150lbs comp.

local Pioneer on CL

A local is selling a garage full of misc junk and listed a Pioneer. I just Emailed him to ask him model number and condition.

Let's assume he has no clue and tells me it's a basket case covered in dust in the corner, no model number information, no nothing. What should I offer, $20?

If I pick it up cheap and it's worth something to one of you Pioneer fans, maybe I'll trade for a Stihl parts saw or a P&C kit for my 028.

Here is what the guy wrote back to me about the saw:
"Can't tell you alot without looking saw over. I bought it about 1990 from friend, he bought it new. He worked for the USFS in AZ. Large saw, 30+" bar, 4 cu. in. maybe? I retired it a few years back, so been sitting, pull cord broke. Parts hard to get here, I needed something servicable, Switched to Stihl. Ran very good, all there but pull cord handle. No extra parts."

I Emailed him back offering $20. Let's see if he bites. And if I get it, who wants it? And what do you have to trade? I will consider:
- a beater 036, 044 or 046 in re-buildable condition
- a Tecomec P&C for an 028 46 mm bore
- cash, for what you Pioneer fans think it's worth

Or if I like it a lot, maybe I'll keep it as my big saw. Might be cool to bring to a GTG, if I ever go to one.

I will post if I get a reply from this guy.

local Pioneer on CL

Here is what the seller told me it is. I did not go to see it so no picture:

253 FHMSW with original 24" bar, I think he said it's still got a good chain on it.

I looked it up on Acresinternet and could not find this model number. He told me he had some ignition work done a few years ago, it ran great, then the pull cord broke and he let it sit for 4 years since he has several Stihls for his work saws. He wants $40.

So:
- Is it worth that much or more assuming its condition is OK minus the pull rope?
- If I pick it up and someone wants to trade for it, would you want me to clean it up, replace the rope, and get it running first or send as-is?

Post a reply here or PM me (again). If this saw isn't worth something to me or one of y'all I won't bother with it. I have enough other non-running projects to spend my money on so no big deal.

From what I see in his reply it is a Farm Saw II , they are very common and only a 66 cc engine class, they were designed as a home owner/farm or landowner saw , not built quite as well as the pro models.

I think I'll pass at $40

Thanks Lou and Jerry. Based on what you told me, I think I'll pass on this one at $40. If he calls me back and wants it for $20 or less just to get it out of his shop, I might go back.

I am about to order $150 worth of parts for my old Snapper yard tractor rebuild (pic attached), and I still need a carb kit & air filter for my 026, so $40 for a non-valuable saw is not a deal.

I guess in some localities parts can be scarce and demand better prices if a saw is parted out. Not much demand for them up here but then again they were made here and the market was flooded with them.

My saw has about 120lbs comp Thats after warming it up for 2 mins or so Muffler slightly modded holes drilled out to 7/16 from 5/16 standard outlet

120lbs is not good, It will run but not have much power. Timberwolf responded to your other post, he explained everything great.

Wow!

Brian that's quite bit of change for a piece of plastic LOL! Wish I had a box of them.I guess I got a good deal when I picked up my I think it's a 1071 cover for $9.00 Can. Collectivley us Pioneer guy's have to find a way to get them made.

I hear you...I had some "extra" cash and decided to go for it. I guess I wasn't the only one with that theory. I figured $45 would lock it up for sure...oh well. It is just a chainsaw...

Am I sensing an EVIL laugh there??? :chainsaw:

No not Evil, I stopped in to see them last Spring when I was up that way, they had a lot of stuff bought out from a former Pioneer dealer. I bought the only 4 NOS filter covers they had, the rest looked used or had marks and scratches on them.

Only way to get that stuff is to bid as if you can`t live without it, its only money.
