the 346 i will be posting vids of is a black gas cap non e-tec. also looks like a non cat muffler. no matter how good the saw is stock, there is more RELIABLE power that can be gotten out of it. not just muffler mod but porting also. i have not seen a stock saw that i can not do a woods port on and make it even better. tinkering with engines is not just my job, its my life and obsession :)

Not even trying to question that aspect. I was meaning like the 200t, not a whole lot need, it's pretty mean out of the box. There is always room for more, thats just human nature.

hey ben thanks for the recco on the 372xp but would you rather have 79cc saw that weighs the same as the xp?

I'm nit-picking, but reliability is something that is demonstrated over time... in high hundreds to low thousands of hours, not proposed "up-front". Upping performance does not necessarily translate into a more reliable saw if that extra power is used a lot. Irrespective of the additional component stresses, more power is more heat, and modding the muffler only looses some of that additional heat.
A increase in longetivity is possible with a mod saw, mostly by virtue of a the superior port chamfer that some tuners are capable of. To make a blanket statement to the effect that all mod saws will last longer is a stretch and common sense tells me other wise.
Is logetivity even a issue with 95% of the people on this board? How many hours per year does the average joe here put on a saw?

Somebody ship Andy their 5100, a 290 with a saddle, and a Wild Thing so he can compare the full gambit and give us a report!

I have offered to send Andy my 5100.....

I think he is afraid he will have to buy it cause I have a feeling he won't return it to me....

Great post!!!!!!!

I have spent a lot of time behind the wildthing, it is more forgiving to operator error, but nowhere near as fast in the cut nor as much power.
I have run an 026, decent saw in it's time, but less than impressive now vs. other models available, expecialy for the money. I would love to get my hands on a 5100!!!! And I have a 270 sitting in the garage, and thats all I will do with it, let it sit there!!!

I can't help but wonder if something is wrong with yer saw.
It is used you said?
I ran mine in a 24+ inch log, with a 18" bar, buried, and it didn't bog at all.

How hard are you bearing down on it? :hmm3grin2orange:

Not to insult your intelligence, but have you adjusted the carb?
Is it possible that the chain is dull? Something doesn't seem right.
It is not that fussy of a saw, imho.

I am intriuged now Ben, will the muffler mod make that much of a difference on a pre-EPA 346? I understood these where close to perfect out of the box? I have not tweaked with the carb, had the saw two weeks and just now found time to run it. Going to the woods sometime this weekend, so I will adjust everything out before I head and see where it falls there as well.
I am really just trying to figure out if it's me, if it's the saw or what is going on! The chain wasn't the best, it was one that came with the saw and I had to grind it at 32deg instead of the 30 I reffer to get it to clean up right without grinding the piss out of it. It was very grabby to start with, but as it dulled it was pulling very nice chips! I ran it thorugh some hedge and hackberry before hand, 10" wood, and it acted the same, cut like a mother, until you pushed it just that much more, no bog nothing, just stops the chain!!!

If I am doing something wrong please do tell, I am sure it's the first time I have been corected on this site before:jester: And have no doubt as highly touted as this saw is, that I very well may be doing something wrong!

And that is exactly what I am trying to find out!!!!
